Program History

The UIS Campus Food Pantry program began in the 1970’s as a grass roots effort to collect non-perishable items from staff, faculty, and students, and donate them to local needy families. There are collection boxes in every building on campus that are periodically checked for donations. Cash donations are also welcome and can be dropped off at the bursar's office. Special collection programs are organized during Thanksgiving and at the UIS annual holiday party every December. The Food Pantry also works with student groups on special collections. All donations are divided and distributed to four local food pantry programs:

•Christ Episcopal Food Pantry (611 East Jackson)
•Grace Lutheran Food Pantry (714 East Capitol)
•Kumler Neighborhood Ministries (600 North Fifth)
•SARA Center (1315 North Fifth)
