Credit for Prior Learning

Sometimes our students come to us having already expanded their worlds through careers, the military, volunteerism, or personal interests. We recognize the value of life experience.

The Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) program allows you to develop a portfolio that details college-level learning in your past. We will assess your significant accomplishments and award academic credit where appropriate.

Students interested in pursuing credit through CPL should:

  • be admitted to UIS,
  • have declared a major, and
  • have junior standing (completed 60 semesters of credit) with at least 12 hours in their major.

For undergraduate students, the four credit hours earned in AST 305 counts toward the University Requirement. For new students, three credit hours of CPL can be used to meet one of the ECCE categories: ECCE Elective.
