ESL classes are taught in technologically modern classrooms. Students have access to computer labs, media centers, and an English Language Resource Center.
Students are encouraged to visit the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL). There, students can make one-on-one appointments with ESL Writing Specialists and attend workshops on a variety of topics. The CTL also has a resource library with self-study guides in writing, grammar, and pronunciation.
In addition, all students have access to the library, The Athletics & Recreation Center (TRAC), and Visual Arts Gallery. UIS also boasts two studio theatres, a yearlong film series, and weekly lectures from visiting scholars.
International students often tell us what luxurious and convenient housing we have. Students may live on or off-campus. On-campus, students have variety of housing options - from fully furnished apartments to rooms in a dormitory. All options are located within a five minute walk to the main campus buildings, are safe, and allow access to amenities such as user-controlled heat and air conditioning and laundry facilities.
Off campus, students can discover the city of Springfield by touring the capital where our state government works, exploring the many President Abraham Lincoln sites, wandering through the famous Dana-Thomas House built by world-renowned architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, and hiking in one of several regional state parks. Of course, students can just relax by heading downtown to listen to music, to the west side for shopping, or a weekend get-a-way to nearby cities.
