One of the best things about UIS is our size and focus on community. Since we are a fairly small university, students get individualized attention and develop relationships with professors and fellow classmates. Our classes are taught by expert faculty and use modern methods.
Springfield is between the metropolitan areas of Saint Louis and Chicago which are easily accessible by public transportation. We are the fifth largest city in Illinois and the state’s capital. Students can discover the city of Springfield by touring the capitol where our state government works, exploring the many President Abraham Lincoln sites, wandering through the famous Dana-Thomas House built by world-renowned architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, and strolling through the weekly farmers market and speaking with local farmers. With a population of about 105,000, Springfield also boasts a wildlife sanctuary, zoo, and memorial and botanical gardens. A lively music scene includes jazz, blues, community theater, municipal opera, comedy, and live bands. It's also easy to escape the city life by heading to the many lakes, hiking trails, and state parks.
