Teaching Concentration: poetry, fiction and playwriting; African-American Literature, particularly the novels of Toni Morrison, and the development of African-American Literature from Wheatley to 1965.
Courses: ENG 470 Creative Writing: Poetry, Short Fiction, The Novel, and Playwriting; ENG 570: The Long Poem, and ENG 375 Expository Writing, online and traditional classes.
Marcellus J. Leonard, DA, Associate Professor, UIS Ombudsman, Writing Specialist in the Center for Teaching and Learning, earned the doctorate in the teaching of writing at Illinois State University. He has taught at UIS since August 1989.
Dr. Leonard is an amateur photographer and has edited several literary magazines, including the ICBCHE Creative Writing Journal and Jujus' Jubilee, Illinois State University. He has formed his own publication company, Glass Cage Press, through which his poetry chapbooks Cardboard Ears: The Early Poems and Nubian Cousins: Adventures in Verse have been published. Professor Leonard has also produced, directed and performed in radio and television programs featuring his writing for Access Four, Springfield, including "Marcellus Leonard and Friends," "Marcellus Reads," and ""Wade and The Writer."
