Students interested in teaching English at the secondary level may seek Illinois state teacher certification. The information on this page details the requirements for earning certification to teach English at the secondary level, as agreed between the UIS English and Teacher Education Programs (TEP).

A classroom in the UIS English program.Candidates pursuing certification to teach English at the secondary level who hold a B.A. in English from another accredited institution must meet ISBE Content Area Standards for ENG/Language Arts and successfully complete at least two courses in English taught at UIS.

The Teacher Education advisor adjudicates on Standards satisfaction. The identification of the two English courses to be successfully completed at UIS is left up to the discretion of the candidate and should be made in light of these distribution requirements, as well as in light of the candidate’s transcripts on distribution of and performance in English courses at the accredited institution where the teaching candidate earned his/her English B.A. Successful completion of an English course at UIS is here defined as the earning of a B- or a higher grade in that course.

Please note:

  • The same course cannot be used to satisfy requirements in two categories.
  • The teacher education program certification to teach English at the secondary level is not currently available to online students.
