Just as the twig is bent the tree’s inclined.”

Students interested in teaching English at the secondary level may seek Illinois state teacher licensure. The information on this page details the requirements for earning a licence to teach English at the secondary level, as agreed between the UIS English and Teacher Education Department. For specific information on licensure, please contact the UIS Teacher Education Program.

Please note that Illinois state licensure requirements are currently being revised and updated, so be sure to consult with English and TEP faculty advisors before proceeding with any course of study or course registration. Changes may outpace the update of web pages or printed materials.

A classroom in the UIS English program.Candidates pursuing licensure to teach English at the secondary level who hold a B.A. in English from another accredited institution must meet ISBE Content Area Standards for ENG/Language Arts and successfully complete at least two courses in English taught at UIS.

The Teacher Education faculty advisor adjudicates on standards of satisfaction. The identification of the two English courses to be successfully completed at UIS should be selected in consultation with the TEP faculty advisors with input from the English Department faculty. Factors to be taken into account may include content area coverage and meeting distribution requirements, as well as the candidate’s performance in English courses (as indicated by transcripts and any other materials requested for review, such as writing samples or syllabi) at the institution where the teaching candidate earned his/her English B.A. Successful completion of an English course at UIS is defined as the earning of a B- or a higher grade in that course.

Please note:  The same course cannot be used to satisfy requirements in two categories in the English major or minor.

The Education Concentration in English is not currently available to online students. Program adaptations for students in the UIS online English B.A. program or those coming to UIS with an English B.A. from another accredited institution should be discussed with the candidates’s faculty advisors in English and Teacher Education.

Course Requirements

If you have questions about the English curriculum for the English B.A. Education Concentration / TEP Minor, please contact Dr. Donna Bussell, the TEP/English Department liaison.  All questions on teacher licensure or curriculum should be directed to the UIS Teacher Education Program.
