Bachelor’s Degree Online Admissions Process

Application Information

  • Student credentials are evaluated first in the UIS Admissions Office and then by the Online English Program Admissions Committee.
  • Must satisfy the enrollment criteria of both UIS and English Program.
  • Program decisions on admission are made only after all required application information has been received.
  • Acknowledgments are sent once all materials have been processed.
  • Applicants submitting all materials by the priority deadlines will be notified of admission decisions within 4-6 weeks of the deadline.

English Program Requirements

  • A minimum of 30 credit hours at the lower-division level (60 credit hours or an Associate’s degree is preferred in order to fulfill general education requirements)
  • A preferred cumulative grade point average of 3.0* or higher on a 4.0 scale from an accredited college or university
    • Cumulative GPAs below 3.0 will be considered. If below 3.0, please include reason for GPA in Statement of Intent.
  • Completion of two English Composition courses with a grade of C or better
  • Completion of two lower-division (100/200-level) literature courses with a grade of C
  • Access to the Internet and compliance with Technology Requirements: Center for Online Learning, Research, and Service (COLRS)

Deadlines for applications to the Online English Program:

  • Fall Semester
    • Priority Deadline – March 1
    • Final Deadline for Application/Program Closed – July 31
  • Spring Semester
    • Priority Deadline – October 1
    • Final Deadline for Application/Program Closed – November 30

Applications submitted after the deadline will still be considered; however, the program admits a limited number of students each academic year. Admission is competitive. We do not admit students for the summer semester.

  • English Department application
    • Statement of Intent/Writing Sample
      • 750 words
      • Addresses academic, work, and pertinent life experiences, rationale for becoming an online major in English, plans for progress toward degree
        • If GPA below 3.0, please include reasons for GPA.
      • Include Full Name, Email and Degree Program in Header
      • Accepted formats: .PDF, .DOCX, .DOC
