“We become lovers when we see Romeo and Juliet,
and Hamlet makes us students. The blood of Duncan is upon our hands,
with Timon we rage against the world, and when Lear wanders out upon
the heath the terror of madness touches us. Ours is the white sinlessness
of Desdemona, and ours, also, the sin of Iago.”
-
Oscar Wilde
The Master's Degree in English at UIS encourages students to grow beyond the scope of a B.A. in English and enter a more advanced arena of scholarly and critical discourse about literary and cultural texts.
By graduation, our M.A. students have either written a book-length work
of literary criticism, a novel, or have proven their knowledge by taking
a highly advanced exam on literature and literary theory. As a result,
they become more desirable to potential employers.
Many of our graduates go on to enter Ph.D. programs at other institutions, teach English courses at the community college level, or become professionals in any number of careers.
For more information about the English Master's Degree Program at UIS, please contact the Director of Graduate Studies, Dr. Tena Helton.
Please note that we do not offer an online Master's Degree Program at this time. The English Department is looking into developing a blended degree program, in which students must attend campus for some, but not all, of their graduate coursework. If you are interested in this blended program, please contact the English Online Coordinator, Denise Howard Long.
