Once accepted into the program, candidates will plan their degree according to one of three closure options:
The courses required for graduation will reflect both this choice as well as the student’s academic history at the time of admission to the program. A range of 32-48 credit hours of English electives reflects the heterogeneous undergraduate preparation of incoming students and allows the graduate committee to help students overcome any deficiencies. Because of this range, it is very important that students consult with their academic advisor very early upon matriculation into the program.
All M.A. candidates in English must complete at least five 500-level courses (colloquia, seminars, or thesis), including ENG 572 Graduate Research Methods. Candidates choosing the comprehensive examination as their closure option must complete six 500-level courses. Among their English course electives, students must take:
