In addition to completing the UIS application for graduate study, applicants are expected to complete the program application (available below), take the GRE General test, and submit a goals essay, a writing sample, and two references (using the form available below).

To be eligible for full admission to the master of arts program in English, applicants with a baccalaureate degree in English are expected to have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale overall and 2.75 in English courses.
To be eligible for full admission to the master of arts program in English, applicants with a baccalaureate degree in a field other than English are expected to have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 2.5 overall, complete English 311 with a grade of B or better, complete at least 16 hours of coursework in English beyond freshman composition, including English 311 and at least one course each in English and American literature.
