Beginning in a rural, northeastern WI childhood, Lemke’s interest in natural resources, especially water, has continued throughout his life.  Lemke’s professional training pertinent to this project began as a coordinator of field classes as a teacher’s assistant in 1977, and continued through two field seasons with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (MT, ID) and two years of field experience in wilderness camps across interior Alaska with the National Park Service.  Lemke has maintained a field-oriented research program on the Illinois River since coming to UIS, directed undergraduate and graduate studies, and was academic co-director of month-long teacher leadership workshops for the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship Foundation.
