About the ODS Lab

ODS is now equipped to offer a variety of adaptive technology to assist students with disabilities in maximizing their academic success.

The Adaptive Technology Lab is located in the Human Resource Building Room 80. For more information about the AT Lab, or to schedule a free training session, call (217)-206-8555.

Software Available...

JAWS for Windows:

JAWS is designed for students with visual disabilities. The program allows students to successfully navigate through documents and the internet. JAWS reads everything that is on the screen, the keyboard is used to navigate through documents.

Dragon Dictate:

This program allows students with Physical Dexterity impairments to speak while the computer takes the spoken word and translates it into printed material. This program also works with the Internet, speech commands will allow the user to navigate through web pages and Microsoft programs. This program takes 20-30 minutes to train; however, the program is more successful if the user trains the program for 20-30 minutes beyond the initial training session.

TextHELP:

TextHELP is used for students with learning disabilities. The program is similar to JAWS in that it also reads screens; however, this program cannot navigate through documents or the World Wide Web. This program reads each sentence as it is typed to ensure accuracy and meaning of the text. This program also adapts to your specific style of writing and features such things as Word Prediction and Homophone distinction.

ABBYY Finereader:

ABBYY FineReader® is an intelligent and easy-to-use OCR (Optical Character Recognition) and PDF conversion software that is the optimal alternative to manual data entry and typing. It is an ideal choice for professionals that want to save time and effort while producing excellent results. It provides powerful functionality for converting images received from a scanner, a digital camera or by fax, as well as PDF files, into editable and searchable formats. The program accurately retains formatting and layout of documents and supports a wide range of recognition languages and output file formats.

ZoomText:

Interpretype:

Interpretype, LLC offers technology that provides people who have communication disabilities, either physical or language related, with access to services and career opportunities. Interpretype assures the necessary qualities for face-to-face communication are in place by replacing those that are lacking.
