30 Years and Counting Friends first recommended the Auditorium volunteer program to the Brooks in 1989, and they have been volunteering ever since—thirty years of volunteering.
They first became ushers, then floor managers, and now Ed is a house manager. He meets with all the volunteers before the show and then positions the volunteers to answer questions and direct patrons to their seats.
Once the show starts, Ed and Helen and the other volunteers stay on hand to help patrons and answer questions.
Through all their 30 years, if Ed and Helen could not find an empty seat during a performance, they had to stand throughout the event.
Now, they and all their fellow volunteers have seats reserved for them--seats which Ed and Helen helped to purchase through a gift to the Auditorium.
The seats are free-standing so that they can be placed close to the patrons. That way, says Ed, “if the patrons get up in the middle of a show, we can jump up with a flashlight to show them the way.”
The seats also vary in height. According to Carly Shank, director of audience and development and communication, the Auditorium purchased a variety of high and low seats and stools to give volunteers a good view of the stage.
Each year volunteers give their time and service to the Auditorium, helping to keep costs for events as low as possible. Now, thanks to the Brookses, they will be a little more comfortable as they do so.
