howard Kang--learning what community looks like

Business mentor for international non-profit organization
Kenya, Africa

He’s always dreamed of being a CEO somewhere. Then this business major from Beaverton, Oregon, spent two months in Kenya the summer before his senior year in order to fulfill UIS’ internship requirement.

“I slept in a tent next to the residents’ huts with no running water and no electricity,” says Howard Kang. “I held camps for orphans and helped out with HIV/AIDS awareness seminars. It was the most amazing experience of my life.”

Kang returned to finish his double major at UIS but all thoughts of climbing the corporate ladder had vanished. Instead, he began looking into organizations that would place him back in Africa, this time using his business degree.

“I was hired by an organization that helps African villages learn and apply American business principles to build their economies,” says Howard. “I will coach, mentor and work with local leaders.”

No corner office, no key to the executive washroom. Kang doesn’t care. He fondly remembers a hopeful people with no self-pity and a generous people who taught him to shepherd and speak some Maasai.

“I learned a lot about what community looks like,” he says. “I know I could be successful in business but I can make a real difference in Africa. Why does America need another businessman?”
