A Long Time Coming Susanne Galbraith, Miles City, Montana, resident, celebrated her son’s high school graduation last spring with a cap and gown…
for herself.
That’s right. And it was a long time in coming.
Susanne wanted to go to college after high school, but says she wound up getting a job, “all the while thinking about the time when it would be possible to continue my college education.”
Life went on, she got married, and she and her husband Joel worked hard and raised Lindsay, 24, and Derick, 18. All along she knew she wanted to get back to the books.
But what do you do when you have a job, two kids, bills to pay, and live in a remote area?
As luck would have it, she found that UIS not only offered an online program, but she could get a scholarship for returning students like herself.
Susanne received the Grace Brorstrom Oakley scholarship, which gives money to returning students just like Susanne, who pursue a degree online. UIS Professor Burks Oakley, renowned specialist in online education, provided the scholarship in honor of his mother, Grace Brorstrom Oakley.
Oakley says his mother was a great believer in education, and gave away much of her income to charities and directly to people in need.
“She often said ‘The more I give away, the more I get.”
Suzanne says the Oakley scholarship helped build her confidence. “It’s nice to know that others believe in you,” Susanne says.

You can support students like Susanne by giving to online scholarships at UIS. We do not have many that target online students specifically--even though this is a wonderful way to provide access to students who may not be able to study at UIS any other way.
