Meet the Development Staff

Joe Hughes
Director of Gift Development

Joe has been with the UIS Office of Development since February 2006. His primary responsibilities are focused on building relationships and securing major gifts for the UIS College of Business and Management. He also serves UIS as the director of major gifts for Sangamon Auditorium and Brookens Library. In collaboration with the University of Illinois Foundation (UIF), Joe facilitates opportunities for individual alumni and friends of UIS to achieve their philanthropic goals through their generous support.

Joe brings with him a depth of experience in development, education, consulting, administration, and public relations. He served as a Lutheran minister for over twenty-five years, and successfully led large capital campaigns to renovate and update existing buildings, provide accessibility modifications, and new construction, including one in which he helped secure gifts and pledges for a new $1 million facility.

A native of New Orleans, Joe earned the Bachelor of Arts with Distinction in history from Concordia College in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, the Master of Divinity from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, and a doctorate in homiletics through the Association of Chicago Theological Schools. He is a member of Phi Alpha Theta history honor society, the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), the Association of Fund Raising Professionals (AFP), and is affiliated with the Development Professionals Affinity Group of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and the Academic Library Advancement Development Network (ALADN).

Joe and his wife, Deborah A. Case, make their home in Springfield. They have four adult children all of whom live in Illinois.
