Think back to your own university experience. Your friends certainly had an impact on you, your excurricular commitments, your volunteer work, and your roommates.
But near the top, wasn't there a special professor, someone who took an interest in you, cared about your progress, inspired you to further learning and possibly even greater dreams?
UIS has MANY professors like this, and students have been quick to express their appreciation.
We are indeed fortunate to have at UIS professors excellent professors, forming the core of our intellectual community. One of the best ways to strengthen that core is through professorships.
At right, you can see Karl McDermott, our new Ameren Distinguished Professor in Business and Government. Dr. McDermott specializes in public utility regulation and will not only add greatly to the knowledge and expertise of our business students, but will also contribute to the wellbeing of all Illinois residents through his research.
As you can see, professorships can dramatically enhance a university. They allow us to attract scholars from around the world with the promise of many benefits which are paid for from the interest accrued from the initial gift. These benefits might include:
At UIS, we have five endowed professorships, including at least one in each of our four colleges, and one endowed chair. This is a notable achievement in an institution of our size and age. They include:
As you can tell, professorships are wonderful naming opportunities. You can name the professorship for yourself, for someone you admire and want to honor, or in memory of a loved one.
Whatever your choice, because the professorship is endowed and only interest income will be spent, you will be creating a lasting legacy at UIS, contributing to the brilliant futures of our students, our university community, and all the many lives that our students will touch throughout their lives.
