Community service and Leadership

Thank you for your interest in giving to scholarship funds that highlight students with a commitment to community service and leadership throughout the campus. Please remember that we have many other scholarships like these that are linked to particular departments or programs.

Oh, and we hope you enjoy reading about our wonderful donors and the stories behind each scholarship!

If you want to add your gift to their efforts on behalf of UIS students, you can give safely online or by mail to our office. Thank you!

Anna May Smith Scholarship Donate

A tireless advocate for social justice, Anna May Smith’s lifework included positions held as a college professor, program administrator, speech therapist, producer and director of radio and theater, social activist, as well as a loving wife and mother. Ms. Smith joined UIS (then Sangamon State University) in 1973 after an illustrious career with alma mater, Barat College where she was professor and chair of the Speech and Drama department. Upon her retirement from UIS in 1985, Ms. Smith later returned to Barat College and in 1996, helped establish Barat College’s Upward Bound program which afforded hundreds of inner-city young women the opportunity of a college education. Other work included a clinical practice in speech therapy.  Ms. Smith received her master’s degree from Columbia University. The Anna May Smith Scholarship was established in memory of Ms. Smith upon her death in 2006 at 90 years of age. Recipients selected for this scholarship must be female students in good academic standing, enrolled a minimum of four credit hours, and have demonstrated an ability to incorporate their life experiences into their academic work.
