global experience programs
WHY GLOBAL EXPERIENCES ARE SO IMPORTANT
At UIS, we have a motto: Local excellence; global impact.
Each year, around thirty students
personally go from “local” to “global” by taking part in a study abroad experience, giving up their income and paying extra to go.
WHAT STUDENTS GAIN FROM GLOBAL EXPERIENCE
- Academic benefits: Students become more interested in learning, and more often decide
to attend graduate school.
- Global competence: Students become curious and learn more about geography, global affairs, and cultural communication.
- Global sensitivity: When students encounter poverty first hand, see how truly limited medical care can be, and have someone offer them their own bowl of beans and tortillas,
their lives change forever.
- Career direction: Study abroad offers students a new sense of purpose regardless
of what career they are planning.
- Personal maturity: Most of all, study abroad helps students mature. Speaking of his global experience program, UIS student Julian Borjas says, “This trip reinforced a lot of things I had been thinking about. It definitely makes you think to keep on the right track, to make sure your life goals are not selfish, but that you are giving back, maybe even in excess of what
you are taking.”
