Women's Center

Three students...

They are at three different universities or colleges, spread across the country:

  • One of these students should be studying for a political science test,
  • another completing a case study for a management class, and
  • the third writing up a microbiology lab.

Instead—even as these three students are trying to concentrate on their studies—they are wondering if they will get back to their apartment safely or be able to cope with an eating disorder or avoid an encounter with someone who seems to be stalking them.

All three students are women (though men may also struggle with these issues).

Are you surprised?

The UIS Women's Center--A Place for Strength and Joy

Slide Show: Through the Year at the UIS Women's CenterAt UIS, the Women’s Center is an important line of defense against these concerns.  Your gifts to the Center will help strengthen this line of defense, helping to keep all UIS students—women and men—safe, successful, and strong.

Your gifts will help the Women's Center do so much more, especially in celebrating the contributions of women to UIS:

  • Devi Akkaraju and Diane SahagunYou will help us celebrate the artistic, academic, and personal achievements of women at UIS. This fall we are planning an art show featuring the work of Lorena Johnson. We'll hold the show in conjunction with our Love Your Body annual event where we encourage women to fight back against the idea that their bodies are somehow Monique Williamsunacceptable and require constant improvement. Donate
  • Your gifts also help to support the Women's Peace and Friendship Garden, where each fall we honor the awardees of the Naomi B. Lynn Award for Outstanding Contributions to Women at UIS. We offer this garden for
Jamila Pattersoneveryone to visit as a place of beauty and peace. Donate
  • Your gifts will "open the universe" to students who attend national women's conferences. You can read more about the difference these women's conferences make for our students here. Donate

Diane Sahagun, Yolanda Beamon, and Women's Center Director Lynn Otterson in the CenterKeeping Students Strong

The Women’s Center at UIS helps to promote a campus climate that is supportive, healthy, and respectful of all people.  The Center does so through events such as the following—

  • Take Back the Night
  • A presentation on stalking by nationally known speaker, Michelle Garcia
  • The Clothesline Project

These events help to inspire confidence and empower students, and especially women, who might confront these issues disproportionately, to stand firm and together against anything that threatens their success at school.

We want our daughters, sisters, mothers, our brothers, sons, and friends to be free to pursue dreams and achieve goals, and yet according to this video on why colleges and universities need women's centers, students at universities and colleges confront issues like harassment, stalking, and abusive relationships more than at any other time in their lives.  We want our students to thrive in an environment that celebrates strengths, contributions, and success. Your gifts and support will help the UIS Women’s Center achieve that goal.

Please join us in this important endeavor by making a gift today.  For information on what your gifts can accomplish and our specific needs, please click on the How You Can Help link at left.
