Meet Tabitha Borne One memorable volunteer activity I have
done in the past:
I have a 3-year-old daughter so there has been very little time leftover to participate in volunteer activities. Since she has started her first year of pre-K, I have had a little bit more time for things. I recently was able to help her pre-K teachers by preparing copies, projects, snacks, etc. The upcoming Habitat for Humanity project is the first big volunteer activity for me, so I’m really excited.
Someone who has inspired me to give back to others:
My global issues teachers last semester really opened my eyes up to things that are happening around the world that you just don’t think about on a daily basis. He inspired me to be aware and do my part in helping in subjects like water conservation, food conservation and sanitation, oil and gas usage, and treatment of others in general. I really thought the whole topic of child trafficking was eye opening. Thinking of that encourages me to want to help find a solution to such horrific problems around the world.
A poem that motivates me to be of service to others:
I like the song by the late Michael Jackson “Heal the World”—the video for this song is very touching and it’s just a really inspiring, beautiful, and truthful song. I would say it is one of the many songs that makes me motivated to help others and treat others with kindness and respect.
Someone who has made a difference in my own life:
I would have to say my mother. She taught me all the good things I know…and maybe even some bad. But I just love her dearly. She’s the one person I know always has my back no matter what.
One problem I would fix in society if I could:
People judging others and putting down others. I don’t think it’s right.
Why I want to go on Alternative Spring Break:
I have never volunteered for any big projects before, and it is something I have always wanted to do because I enjoy helping people. If this is the only event I get to volunteer for in my life, I will be happy because at least I know I got at least one opportunity to really help out on something meaningful and important to others.
Tabitha is only one of many students who would like to be of service to others through Alternative Spring Break. All gifts will be added to a common fund to pay for the bus that will take students to Galveston. Your gifts in any amount will help more students to be able to go. Please give.
