This Resource Office provides encouragement and support to our students who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning. We especially want to challenge intolerance and promote affirmation so that we can have an even more inclusive campus. You can read a Journal article about the LGBTQ Resource Center here.

How We Do ThatWe have never been able to send students to a national or regional LGBTQ student leadership conference. Attendance at such a conference can be an incredible growth experience for students, with a chance to explore challenges with other students from across the country, skill training on leadership, access to national leaders in social justice and human rights, and much more. And when students come back to UIS, they can help make UIS more LGBTQ friendly. For one student to attend (travel, registration, and expenses), we would need a gift of $1000 to $1200. Please note your intention for the gift in the comment box of the online giving form. Donate
This last year we had about 150 students attend, some from UIS and some from the surrounding community. You can read about the event here. This wonderful evening, complete with a king and queen, a drag show, raffle, and refreshments would be even better if we could afford a band or other improvements. Gifts of $50, $100, $250, or $500 would be welcome. Donate
This event acknowledges achievements that LGBTQ individuals have done for their university over the academic year. Each year, following a presentation by a speaker, faculty and students receive awards for their contribution to the LGBTQ community. Students also receive lavender cords to wear at the UIS commencement ceremony. You can read more about the 2009 event here.
Your gifts from $25 to $100 would help to support this event, help to purchase the cords, and possibly bring in a guest speaker from off campus. You might also consider a named award that could be given to a deserving student (you could set the criteria for this named award). Donate
The LGBTQ Resource Center also has a library with books, newspapers, magazines, films, and other educational materials that students can check out or read at the Resource Center. We welcome your contributions to this collection, either materials or money. Donate
We currently do not have a scholarship that targets financial support for an LGBTQ student. You could be the first to fund this, either a current-use scholarship or and endowed scholarship.
