UIS has an award-winning student newspaper. In fact, at the Illinois College Press Association in February 2010, students who wrote for The Journal received eight awards, including two first-place awards, for articles, photo essays, and more.
One of these first-place awards was for an editorial entitled,
The editorial addressed the role of social media in student apathy. Judges said the piece was “a thoughtful, interesting take on the tired, old ‘student apathy’ editorial.”
The Journal, a weekly newspaper, circulates through campus and to off-campus sites, including the Illinois capitol. You can learn more about the important learning opportunities The Journal offers students in this UIS Newsroom video and article. You can also read an online version of the newspaper.
Today, an ability to communicate--to tell a story and report facts fairly and effectively no matter what the medium--is so important, especially for college graduates. The Journal provides such an excellent way for students to both gain skills and practice those skills, but we are always hoping to afford even more opportunities for our students.
Through your gifts, you can contribute to this learning and help prepare effective communicators.
Please give generously.
