General FundsThank you so much for your interest in the Political Science Department.
The Political Science Department has one targeted fund. You can give as much or as little as you would like to this fund, and you can give online or by mail.
This fund provides money for special opportunities or extraordinary needs.
These activities and others like them enrich our students immeasurably, enhancing the education they receive at UIS—but we could not do any of them without the discretionary money given to this fund.
The Political Science Department has six targeted scholarship funds.
William Ferris Cummings graduated from SSU in 1973 and worked as an inspector with Illinois Central Gulf Railroad. Mr. Cummings was well-known for his community activities, especially those connected with Community Action, Inc. However a tragic, untimely death claimed his life at the age of thirty. The William Ferris Cummings Memorial Scholarship was established in 1980 by family and friends to honor his memory and is awarded to a minority freshman student pursuing a degree in social services or political science.
An enthusiastic and vibrant presence on the UIS campus, the late Dr. Lee Frost-Kumpf was an associate professor of Political Studies who championed public policy issues in any way he could. He received the Spencer Award for public service in 2003, only months before his death. Dr. Frost-Kumpf’s work included research projects in Springfield, India, New Zealand, Norway and the Ukraine. The Lee Frost-Kumpf Scholarship was established in 2003 to honor his memory. Applicants must be pursuing a master's degree in political studies or public administration.
Nelson Howarth was a respected Springfield attorney and three-term mayor who was instrumental in convincing the Illinois General Assembly to establish the UIS (then Sangamon State University) campus in 1969. He later taught a course in municipal law and administration at SSU. The Mary and Nelson Howarth Memorial Scholarship was originally established by the family and friends in honor of his life and work. In later years, his wife’s name was added by the family, who continue to support the scholarship through generous donations. Applicants for the scholarship must be in good academic standing with a major in Public Administration, Public Affairs Reporting, Environmental Studies, Political Science or History.
Kent Redfield, a leading researcher of campaign contributions in Illinois, professor emeritus at UIS and former director of its legislative intern program, left such an indelible mark on his students that two of them began the process to establish a scholarship in his name. The Kent Redfield Scholarship is awarded to a qualified applicant based on academic merit and financial need.
When the time came for beloved political science professor, Bob Sipe to retire, no one was ready to let him go. The national speaker, global policies expert and blues music enthusiast had affected many a faculty, staff and student with his exuberance, candor and wealth of knowledge. The Bob Sipe Scholarship was established by the Political Science Department at UIS to honor and perpetuate the impact of Dr. Sipe’s contributions to the department and the world.
