SEVEN DEPARTMENTS

WHAT MAKES UIS "A PUBLIC AFFAIRS UNIVERSITY"

Every day, students in the College of Public Affairs and Administration reflect, discuss, and then take action on public policy and civic culture, moving from the University’s classrooms into the world outside the university.

Stellar Location

Students don’t have far to go before engaging real-world concerns. Just across town, we have the Illinois State Capitol, the headquarters of many state agencies and associations, and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library.

Stellar Faculty

In classes, students learn from excellent and engaged faculty with a deep commitment to Illinois, public service, and our great country’s future.

Most of our faculty do research in Public Affairs—research that significantly influences the best practices in government and policy.

Faculty come to us with experience in their fields. Charlie Wheeler is one example. A veteran newsman and successful columnist, Charlie leads UIS’ renowned Public Affairs Reporting program.

And with so many of our own graduates working as political and public policy leaders in Illinois, we have a ready source of people who will share their expertise with our students and the UIS community as a whole.

Stellar Public Service Opportunities

We don’t keep our students in the classroom. We send them out to take advantage of Springfield’s many public service opportunities—and to share their expertise for the benefit of their learning. In their internships, here and elsewhere in Illinois, students serve as wetland restoration ecologists, write for the Associated Press, and help lobby for the International Federation of Teachers. One student, Lauren Scott, went as far as Russia, where she interned with an anti-torture agency.

YOU CAN HAVE A ROLE

We take pride in the people who have contributed to our success, but an even more brilliant future awaits us. To make this happen,

  • We need to continue attracting and retaining excellent faculty.
  • We need to enhance our faculty research and scholarly activities because these lead to excellent teaching.
  • We need to continue bringing stimulating and thought-provoking speakers to campus to widen our worldview.
  • And we need new courses for our expanded Capital Scholars program, courses that empower our students to change the world.

Brilliant Futures beckon. Please join us in moving toward toward them.
