Find a fund for Clinical Laboratory StudiesFAST FACTS ABOUT CLINICAL LABORATORY STUDIES AT UIS

  • Number of Majors, 2009-2010: 42 majors
  • Targeted Funds:
  • Current Needs:
    • Scholarships: There's a critical shortage of personnel in this field. Please help our students complete their education and begin their service at a hospital near you. Scholarship funds can help students afford:
      1) textbooks
      2) travel to remote clinical sites
      3) high speed Internet for their online assignments
      4) nice shoes/clothes for clinical sites
    • Travel funds: Our students do a good portion of their training at clinical sites, but we don't have enough locally, so many have to travel. Please help our students pay for this travel. Many are self-supporting and struggle to meet this added expense.
    • Real time PCR Light cycler – useful for all 3 science departments and the new molecular concentration, may need a special centrifuge.  Approximately $12,000
    • New microscopes - $2500-3000 each for clinical-quality scopes with a pointer in the eyepiece.  Need 8 Olympus CX31
    • Sturdy stand for the 5-head microscope – when students put their elbows down, the microscope goes out of focus.  The stand would need to be custom-made for the space in HSB 338. Approximately $3000
    • Blood bank reagents and cells – a thorough laboratory experience for the students would cost $15,000 and we can only allocate $5000 for this.  An ideal lab would cost about $1000 per student.
    • Microbiology plates and supplies – a thorough laboratory experience for the students would cost $14,000 and we can only allocate $4000 for this.  An ideal lab would cost about $700 per student.
    • Linda McCown, CLS professorPhlebotomy arms to practice drawing blood – we replace 2-3 per year, they cost about $70 each.
