PROFESSOR Don O’Neal fit right in when he started teaching at UIS in 1992. At UIS, many non-traditional students come to college later in life. Don also completed his doctoral studies later in life, then started teaching, leaving a successful career in business.
“I wanted to share what I’ve learned,” he says—especially the value of “attitude, work ethic, respect, and most importantly dependability.”
As well as many professional books—most recently People in Organizations: What Every Manager Should Know About Human Resources—Don has written If Not Now, When?, a book for the general public on achieving dreams. “I hope to help people believe in themselves and show them how to pursue their dreams.”
Ask his students: they’ll say he does the same for them every time he teaches.
“Every time I look back, I’m glad I started teaching. I left a better-paying job, yes, but with teaching, I can make a real difference in people’s lives. That’s what matters in life; that’s where personal satisfaction comes from.”
Now Don is retiring, and we wish him all the best.
Throughout his years of service here, he has consistently stressed the inherent value of each student and by extension each person his students would work with. In this way, he has helped to develop humane and capable graduates to work in business. We will miss him!
With your help, his influence will remain at UIS, however, through a scholarship fund named in his honor.
Please give to the Donald O'Neal Scholarship, which will provide support for students in the Management program.
