Stellar Cultural Experiences
In 1981, UIS’ Sangamon Auditorium opened its doors for Hal Holbrook’s one-man show, Mark Twain Tonight! Since then, we have offered a wide range of stellar cultural experiences both to the university and to the surrounding community:
- Broadway musicals such as Hairspray, Les Miserables, and Mamma Mia!
- Family events such as Willy Wonka, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and Marie Osmond’s Magic of Christmas.
- Popular artists such as Garrison Keillor, Marvin Hamlisch, the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Willie Nelson, and the Kingston Trio.
- Plays such as The Miracle Worker, Macbeth, Lost in Yonkers, and Love Letters.
- Operas such as The Barber of Seville, La Traviata, and Mozart’s Don Giovanni.
- Dance performances such as Le Ballet National du Senegal and the Hubbard Street Dance Company, as well as ballet performances such as Romeo and Juliet and Swan Lake.
- Special Events, including lectures, graduations, dance recitals, and inaugurations of public officials.
Supporting Local Talent
Sangamon Auditorium also fosters the growth of local talent, serving as the home for two of Springfield’s performing arts groups: the Illinois Symphony Orchestra and the Springfield Ballet Company. And through Class Acts, the
Auditorium’s educational program for grades K-12, we are nurturing a future generation of people who love the performing arts.
Showing Our Age
We have the world-class programming in place. We have the campus collaborations that enhance academic excellence.
But we have a problem....
Our wonderful facilities and equipment are showing their age. With your support, we can bring our Auditorium back up to date so that we can continue bringing Brilliant Futures to UIS and to the greater Springfield community.
