Off to Florida–but Not for Just Sun and Fun
Each spring, UIS students take part in an Alternative Spring Break, during which they spend their week contributing their service to a cause.
This year they will head to the Everglades National Park in southern Florida during Spring Break (March 11-15) to clean and paint visitors’ centers, pick up trash along trails, and help with research at Biscayne Bay.
They Need Your Help–and It’s Not Too Late to Give
If you are UIS alumni who have come to this page from the monthly e-newsletter, @UIS, you may be realizing that the students are in the Everglades at the time you are reading this page.
The students, who still need are your help, are hoping you will join them through your gifts.
Each student has to pay $150 to go on the trip and is also expected to raise $130. The money you give can help our less-able students pay their expenses for travel, housing, food, and fun (yes, they will have a few opportunities for fun!).
ASB President Paige Heiser and her executive board have been working hard to help students raise the necessary funds, but she says, “We need a push to get to our goal.”
You can be that push for students, and believe me, they will be very grateful.

Previous ASB Trips
In past years, they have helped to
- rebuild homes that have been destroyed by hurricanes in New Orleans and Galveston and
- clean up trash along the Mississippi River (you wouldn’t believe what they collected!)
