Dr. Luther Skelton, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy with master and doctorate degrees in political science, was a staunch advocate of energy research and resources. In 1984, he authored a book entitled The Solar Hydrogen Energy Economy: Beyond the Age of Fire, and was sponsor, presenter, and author of numerous articles, research projects, papers and conferences on the subjects of global warming, solar energy and other environmental issues. Before coming to the UIS (then Sangamon State University) in 1978, Dr. Skelton was director of the Coastal Zone Management Program in Florida, as well as director of Planning for the Missouri State Department of Natural Resources. During his tenure at UIS, Dr. Skelton became the first UIS professor to chair the esteemed University of Illinois Senates Conference where he presided over all three senates of the University of Illinois campuses. The Luther W. Skelton Endowment for Energy Policy and Energy Research is awarded to an outstanding graduate student in the Environmental Studies program.

The Environmental Studies Alumni Scholarship was established in 1997 by alumni, faculty and students of the ENS program. It is available to graduate students maintaining a GPA of 3.0 in the Environmental Studies Program. Recipients must have a record of previous interest in environmental issues and provide an example of that interest by submitting a previously written research paper or evidence of a demonstrated involvement in an environmental project.
Nelson Howarth was a respected Springfield attorney and three-term mayor who was instrumental in convincing the Illinois General Assembly to establish the UIS (then Sangamon State University) campus in 1969. He later taught a course in municipal law and administration at SSU. The Mary and Nelson Howarth Memorial Scholarship was originally established by the family and friends in honor of his life and work. In later years, his wife’s name was added by the family, who continue to support the scholarship through generous donations. Applicants for the scholarship must be in good academic standing with a major in Public Administration, Public Affairs Reporting, Environmental Studies, Political Science or History.
Thomas Shearer, who graduated from UIS in 1983 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Environment and People, has established a new scholarship for students who are minoring in Environmental Studies. Currently, Environmental Studies at UIS is a graduate program, but Mr. Shearer has a great concern for students who are working toward their bachelor’s. Because of that, he has specified that his scholarship will be given to an undergraduate student preferably majoring in a degree from the College of Public Affairs and Administration, who is minoring in environmental studies. The student can be either a fulltime or a part-time student. You can add to this new scholarship by using the donate button above this paragraph.
Not interested in any of the funds above? Then you can create your own scholarship fund that targets the students you specify in the Environmental Studies Department. As the principle donor of this new scholarship, you would get to name the fund and establish the selection criteria.
