General Funds

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Fund Donate

This fund provides money for special opportunities or extraordinary needs.

  • Faculty and students can travel to a conference to present their research.
  • Faculty can take part in a special opportunity to update their skills.  Professors need to be aware of the latest developments in their field, so that they can pass this knowledge on to their students.
  • The department can purchase special equipment, test materials, resources, or training modules to help our students attain success and achieve their goals.

These activities and others like them enrich our students immeasurably, enhancing the education they receive at UIS—but we could not do any of them without the discretionary money given to this fund.

Applied Study Term and Experiential Learning Fund Donate

This fund provides support for

  • the Applied Study Term program, which arranges internship positions for students,
  • The Credit for Prior Learning program, which makes it possible for qualified students to receive credit for learning acquired outside the classroom.

Center for Teaching and Learning Donate

The Center for Teaching and Learning offers free help to students interested in improving their academic skills through both faculty and through a peer tutoring program.

CLAS Student Travel Fund Donate

Supports class trips, conference attendance, etc., by students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

Maria Mootry Writing Awards Fund Donate

Writing award in memory of Maria Mootry, UIS associate professor in African American Studies and English, who died in 2000 and published 5 books and other works.

Forensics Team Donate

Funds events that the Forensics team budget cannot fund because of cost or restrictions, including national tournaments, international tournaments, forensics workshops and campus event.

K Fund for Scientific Equipment (CLAS) Donate

The net income from the Fund is used to purchase "big ticket" laboratory equipment in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at UIS. The equipment purchases shall be restricted to laboratory equipment for the physical or biological sciences programs that would be used, though not exclusively, in the undergraduate laboratory courses. The expenditures are not necessarily made each year, but rather the net income is allowed to reinvest in the principal of the Fund until the principal reaches at least $30,000 in 2003 dollars adjusted for inflation. This fund is not yet fully funded (it has not reached $30,000). Your investment could make the difference.

Scholarship Funds

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Scholarship Fund Donate

This fund is collecting funds; once it reaches a threshold level it will be given as a scholarship to students in the college.

Pete Corso Scholarship Fund Donate

Given to a student in the College of Education and Human Services or the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, with preference given to a student from Christian County, Illinois. For many years, Pete Corso worked at the Christian County Mental Health Association, where he became known for his empathy as he worked with both clients and staff. Through this scholarship, raised in his honor by his friends and colleagues, his influence will continue. Please add your gifts to this scholarship.

Levin Scholarship Fund Donate

In an effort to convey the pride and passion felt for the institution of UIS, Emeritus Faculty Malcom Levin established the Cynthia S. Levin Memorial Scholarship in commemoration of his wife who, along with himself, wanted to make a difference in the lives of students. Before her death in 1996 at age 42, Mrs. Levin was executive director of the Dana-Thomas House Foundation in Springfield, a Frank Lloyd-Wright architectural marvel. Qualified applicants  will be graduate students pursuing a degree in liberal arts & sciences. Preference is given to non-traditional females aged 30 and over who have had their education interrupted. Applicants must also be actively engaged in serving society.

William and Mary Schnirring Scholarship Fund Donate

Generous, involved, and tremendously supportive of UIS--these words only begin to describe what wonderful donors William and Mary Schnirring have been to UIS. Mr. Schnirring is chairman of the board of Springfield Electric Supply Company, a family-owned business in Springfield. Both Mr. and Mrs. Schnirring donate their time, energies, and resources to many local charities and nonprofit organizations.   Through their donations, they have funded four scholarships, two for students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, one in the College of Education and Human Services, and one in the College of Business and Management. (They also donated the lights that shine so brilliantly on the flagpoles at the front of the UIS campus.)

Not interested in any of the funds above?  Then you can create your own named scholarship—either a current use scholarship or an endowed scholarship—that targets the students you specify in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. As the principle donor of this new scholarship, you would get to name the fund and establish the selection criteria.
