Online tutoring

How to Make an Online Tutoring Appointment?

  • Call (217) 206-6503 or email ctl@uis.edu and request an appointment to meet with a tutor.

  • Inform the CTL which method of tutoring you prefer.

Methods of Online Tutoring:

Blackboard

In a Blackboard online tutoring appointment, the tutor will work with you asynchronously (not at the same time). The CTL will create a Blackboard group page for you and the tutor for two different times: one time to post student materials and a second time for the tutor to complete their comments about the assignment. Once the CTL has given you an appointment time, follow the steps below before your appointment time.

  1. Log-in to Blackboard.
  2. Click on the "Center for Teaching and Learning" Blackboard.
  3. On the main page of the CTL Blackboard, click on your group page (titled by your name) to access your group's Discussion Board.
  4. Post your assignment and instructions for the assignment as attachments (preferably) to a forum in the discussion board.

If you have completed the steps above by your scheduled appointment time, the tutor will download your assignment and assignment instructions. Then, the tutor will use Word Track Changes to make comments to your assignment and post their comments in a new Word document as a reply to your initial posting by the appointment's end time.

If you have additional questions for the tutor after you have read his/her comments, call the CTL to make another appointment with the tutor.

Elluminate V-Room

In an Elluminate V-Room online tutoring appointment, the tutor will work with you synchronously (live or at the same time). The CTL will schedule you and a tutor to meet at the same time. The tutor will e-mail you at your UIS email address a link to his/her Elluminate V-room. You will go to the link to join the V-Room session at your appointment time. For the session, you will need:

  1. View minimum requirements.
  2. Electronic version of your assignment (preferred)
  3. Electronic version of the instructions to your assignment (preferred)
  4. Computer Speakers turned on
  5. Microphone (optional)

First-Time Elluminate Users
