Writing Standards

The UIS Campus Relations department oversees writing standards for the campus.

Style Guide:

The guidelines contained in the UIS Writing Style Guide are based on the Chicago Manual of Style, published by the University of Chicago Press, though some departures have been made that are specific to UIS.

The guide is by no means exhaustive; it's meant only to address some of the most common questions that writers on this campus may have.

Most commonly used description:

The University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) is one of three campuses of the world class University of Illinois. Located in the state capital, UIS is a small, public liberal arts university with a special mission in public affairs supported by its strong government-related majors and a commitment to engaging students in the community and the world. UIS offers 44 degree programs on-campus and through its dynamic online learning community. (69 words)

25 words or less:

University of Illinois Springfield is the liberal arts campus of the University of Illinois and is known for preparing future leaders in business and government.

15 words or less:

Illinois Springfield is the liberal arts campus of the world class University of Illinois.
