Thank you for your interest in the Credit for Prior Learning Program!
In order to enroll in AST305, you must be admitted to UIS, declare a major, and have completed 60 credit hours along with 12 credit hours in your major, or permission of your advisor. We encourage all students who are considering the CPL program to talk with their academic program advisor regarding their plans to be sure that AST305 Prior Learning Portfolio Development meets the program requirements and your individual educational goals.
At UIS, experiential learning is assessed through a portfolio process. In order to begin the CPL process, students enroll in AST305 Prior Learning Portfolio Development. In this course they learn to develop an experiential learning portfolio. AST305 applies toward the University Requirement, (as do Public Affairs Colloquia and Liberal Studies Colloquia), and also meets the ECCE elective requirement.
AST305 is available to all students, even those at a distance. AST305 is is a four credit hour online course and is offered as credit/no credit. It is offered online every semester, including the summer semester. Note: Although summer sessions of AST305 begin in May and end in August - not the traditional summer semester schedule. If you're planning on enrolling in AST305 for summer, be sure to contact the CPL program by mid-April.
Be clear on your intentions for taking AST305 -- what you want it to apply to, and what experiential learning topic you would like to develop for your portfolio. It involves substantial work and is not a matter of simply telling the CPL instructor "I learned ____ on my last job," to receive credit for your prior learning.
If you're interested in enrolling in AST305, please contact the Credit for Prior Learning Program by phone or email, or stop by the CPL office on the UIS campus in BRK 482.
We look forward to helping you discover the college credit in your past!
