Alternative Transportation

Taking an alternative form of transportation or carpooling to UIS is cheaper and more environmentally friendly than driving alone in your car. The sections below contain information about the Springfield Mass Transit District bus system, links to local Bicycling maps and Carpooling tips.

Springfield Mass Transit District

Springfield’s public transportation system, SMTD, provides public transportation on 13 fixed routes throughout the Springfield, Illinois area. You can learn more about SMTD by visiting their website, www.smtd.org. The #11 bus leaves the downtown transfer station in half hour intervals starting at 6:15 AM and ending at 5:45 PM. The south-bound bus to campus stops at the Public Affairs Center teardrop and the UIS Student Life Building (SLB). The north-bound bus to downtown departs from the information stand in the south-west side of Parking Lot B in half hour intervals starting at 7:20 AM and ending at 5:50 PM. Cost: The cost to ride an SMTD bus is $1.25 or $20 for a fare card worth 20 rides. Fare cards are available at many stores and pharmacies around town and at the Cashier Window at UIS. Transfers are free within 2 hours of the original ride. Obtain a transfer slip from the bus driver on the first leg of your trip.

Bicycling in the Springfield Area

There are many ways to bicycle in the Springfield for both recreation and transporation. Visit the Springfield Bike Club for news, organized rides and information about the local bike trails. The League of Illinois Bicyclists’ Website is another invaluable resource for cyclists providing safety information, Illinois advocacy news and maps including the Springfield Area Bicycle Map which offers suggested low traffic routes for getting around town and some great safety information. A printed version of this map is also available at all local bike stores.

Bike to Work Program

UIS Faculty and Staff can register for the newly created Bike to Work program by going to the Recreational Sports office in TRAC 1008. This free program provides access to a shower and locker facility for employees who commute to campus by bicycle.

Carpooling to Campus

UIS Campus Police offers a discounted rate on parking decals for members of a carpool. Visit the Campus Parking Regluations page for more information about this program.
