COLRS Fellow Layne Morsch presents to a class.COLRS Research Center provides leadership for research on online and blended learning at UIS and beyond. It joins faculty and community members from across the institution and the nation in the collaborative pursuit of research which furthers knowledge in the field and improves the quality of online education. In addition, COLRS Research Center identifies and joins educational, institutional, and corporate partners in the support of best practices, emerging technologies, and the effective design of institutional and individual learning.

COLRS Research is a direct result of the leadership and successful development of online learning at the University of Illinois Springfield. It is supported by the UIS Center for Online Learning, Research and Service, and UIS faculty and staff.

Fall 2016 UIS Online Learning Statistics

  • Online majors made up 30.7 % of UIS headcount enrollment (1,665).
    • The number of online majors increased by 68 from Fall 2015 (+4.3%)
    • Undergraduate online majors increased by 72 from Fall 2015 (+9.6%)
    • Graduate online majors decreased by 4 from Fall 2015 (-0.05%)
  • Online majors are older than their on-campus counterparts:
    • At the undergraduate level by 9 years (32.4 vs 23.4)
    • At the masters level by 8.1 years (35.7 vs 27.6)
  • Online majors reside:
    • in 46 states (all but AK, ME, SD, VT)
    • in DC and 2 territories (PR, MP)
    • in 74 counties in Illinois
    • in 9 foreign countries, including 1 Canadian Province (ON)
    • 87.9% of online majors from Illinois have mailing addresses outside Sangamon county
    • 38.0% of online majors have mailing addresses outside of Illinois
  • Online Course Enrollment
    • Total seatcount in online and blended courses was 8,239 (48.7% of total seatcount)
    • 40.1% of credits were generated in online courses (21,911 credits)
    • 12.1% of credits were generated in blended courses (6,597 credits)
    • 65.7% of students took at least one online course
    • 34.9% of students were registered only in online courses
