John R. Bourne Outstanding Achievement Award in Online Education

“The purpose of this award is to recognize an individual who has demonstrated extraordinary achievements to the field of online learning.  The recipient of this award should be known for scholarly research and writing, leadership activities, service, and/or contributions to advancing the field of online learning” (from OLC/Sloan-C).

  • 2006 – Karen Swan, James J. Stukel Distinguished Professor of Educational Leadership
    From the award announcement, “Dr. Swan’s scholarly
    work on online learning has increased our knowledge and
    contributed to improving both pedagogy and research
    methodologies in the field. Her own research has been focused
    on learning processes in online environments and the effects of
    interactivity, social presence, collaboration and assessment on
    online learning outcomes. Her work is well known and frequently cited internationally; it is especially appreciated for its theoretical grounding .”
  • 2002 – Ray Schroeder, Director of COLRS
    From the award announcement, “A leader in the advancement of Asynchronous Learning Networks (ALN) – people networking through technologies that enable anytime, any place learning – Ray Schroeder is one of the principal architects of the infrastructures for successful online programs. He built his career on applying emerging online technologies to the learning process at all levels, from small rural school districts to large urban universities. Schroeder’s decades of work combine discovery, leadership and service. He has directed and developed one of the most successful online programs in the country at UIS, and his daily web log publication, Online Learning Update is required reading for many who establish and develop online programs around the world.”
  • 2003 – Burks Oakley II, Research Professor
    From the award announcement, “The Sloan-C 2003 award for Most Outstanding Achievement in Online Teaching & Learning by an Individual will be awarded to Dr. Burks Oakley II, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Illinois. Oakley is known internationally for his leadership activities, service, and contributions to the better understanding of online teaching and learning.”
