Online learning at the University of Illinois at Springfield began with the establishment of the Office of Technology-Enhanced Learning (OTEL) in July 1997 with a grant from the Illinois Online Network.
UIS Online has experienced incredible growth since 1998 when 30 students enrolled in two classes. In 2007, nearly 4,000 students enrolled in 220 classes.
In December 2008, University of Illinois at Springfield received approval to establish the Center for Online Learning, Research and Service.
