work force, how can they prepare for the future when the future can be so uncertain?
As the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) at UIS, our mission is to prepare students for the future by providing a broad education for success. We teach students how to participate effectively in an interdependent, diverse, and rapidly changing world, offering education in a transformative environment that stimulates engagement with ideas, each other, and the globe.
The foundation for this environment is a well-rounded curriculum in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Arts, and Physical and Natural Sciences, including Mathematics and Computer Science.
We don’t merely teach professional skills, but also the blend of critical thinking, scientific logic, and appreciation of the humanities that is so important in the development of personal enrichment.
Our College is committed to curricular interdisciplinarity, experiential learning, experimentation, and a concern for student-centered learning in new ways for a new era. These include the use of technologies that aid collaboration and extend the concept of "community" beyond local and regional boundaries.
As a result, UIS students who graduate with a CLAS degree are fuller, richer individuals who are more capable of competing in an ever-changing job market than students whose education specialized in specific technical skills—especially those skills that may be out of date in just a few years.
