Preparing Students for Leadership

We live in a rapidly changing world. Besides the rapid changes in our technology, we have seen changes in our communities and our definitions of culture and diversity. As students get ready to enter the Toshihiro Maeda instructs Japanese language students.work force, how can they prepare for the future when the future can be so uncertain?

As the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) at UIS, our mission is to prepare students for the future by providing a broad education for success. We teach students how to participate effectively in an interdependent, diverse, and rapidly changing world, offering education in a transformative environment that stimulates engagement with ideas, each other, and the globe.

The foundation for this environment is a well-rounded curriculum in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Arts, and Physical and Natural Sciences, including Mathematics and Computer Science.

We don’t merely teach professional skills, but also the blend of critical thinking, scientific logic, and appreciation of the humanities that is so important in the development of personal enrichment.

Our College is committed to curricular interdisciplinarity, experiential learning, experimentation, and a concern for student-centered learning in new ways for a new era. These include the use of technologies that aid collaboration and extend the concept of "community" beyond local and regional boundaries.

Our objective is to help our students become:

  • Intellectually and technologically sophisticated thinkers,
  • Aesthetically aware citizens, and
  • Socially responsible contributors to life in the 21st century.
