Our faculty/staff campaign is coming up in March, and I wanted to tell you about a recent faculty gift that captures UIS' emphasis on
Local excellence; global impact. Jan Droegkamp and her family have created a scholarship for UIS students taking part in the
Global Experience Program here at UIS. The program offers students a chance to study abroad in a wide array of countries. Inspired by her mother, Gerry Droegkamp, who spent years raising money for a school in Kenya, Jan has volunteered in the past with the Peace Corps in Jamaica and Lesotho -- a life-changing experience. Through their scholarship, the Droegkamp family -- mother Gerry, father Harold, sister Jane Lurvey, and Jan herself -- want to pass on this experience to students at UIS. Oh, by the way, if you are looking around for Jan on campus this spring, she's not here. Jan is with the Peace Corps again, this time in Albania. We'll be thinking of you, Jan. You're an ambassador for all of us back here at UIS.

Thank you for your comments about my family's scholarship. My mother died on Jan. 22, 2008. I know she was proud to help UIS student discover the world.

Yes, I am off to Albania on Feb. 16, 2008, for a 30 month stint as the Deputy Director of Peace Corps Albania in charge of Programming and Training.
