I also love working with other people, so I enjoy what I do here at The Learning Hub. I am inspired by those wanting to further understand mathematics!

Hi! My name is Kiana Davis and I am a peer science tutor for the Learning Hub/ I am a sophomore at UIS. My major is in biology with a psychology minor and a pre-med concentration. When I am not being bogged down by homework I like to play board games with my friends, watching hours of Netflix or just read. After I graduate, I hope to go to medical school to be a large animal vet.
I am currently pursuing my M.A. in History and have a B.S. in History, Spanish, and Communication and Rhetorical Studies. I am working as a Writing Teaching Assistant with The Learning Hub, and I have always loved writing and the creative process. To me, writing is an extremely complex process in which we look to not only explore new and interesting topics, but we also look to create new ways to understand those topics. The written word, unlike the spoken word, lives on even after the author is gone. My favorite hobby is traveling. I have had the privilege to travel many places in the United States and Europe including three months in Alicante, Spain. I would go to Tokyo, Japan if I could travel anywhere right now.

Hi, my name is Alex Ayers, one of the Writing Specialists here at The Learning Hub. When I was a kid, I enjoyed writing stories in my free time and expected to continue my life as a creative writer. Instead, I found my passion while working at Knox College’s learning center as a writing tutor. Very quickly, I discovered how much I loved tutoring, talking to students about their writing, and learning about writing center theories. My work in writing centers continued at Western Illinois University where I earned my MA in English and focused my research on online writing centers. Over the years, I’ve been lucky to be a part of four different learning centers in various tutoring and administrative capacities, but I’m most excited about being here at UIS and having the opportunities to work with you and your writing. Aside from tutoring, I love completing Pokedexes, playing with other people’s dogs, practicing tai kwon do, and baking. I hope to see you soon!
Hi, my name is Brock. I am a Political Science major with a minor in History. Writing, to me, is one of the most important breakthroughs in human history, with its ability to preserve and expand upon the ideas of ourselves and others. I hope to help students improve their writing skills, as well as realize the importance of their writing. Outside of school, I enjoy cooking, reading about current events, and, of course, Netflixing.

Since earning an MA in Communication from UIS in 2014, I have worked as a professional writing tutor and instructor of developmental writing at various community colleges. I decided to return to UIS to earn a second MA in English in the digital pedagogy track and work as a Writing TA so that I may build upon this experience and continue helping students achieve their goals in the classroom and beyond. I have found that students apply abstract concepts more concretely and express themselves more fully when they feel that the university is a collaborative environment where they can safely practice new skills and where their insights and experiences are integral to a vibrant learning environment. I thoroughly enjoy opportunities to assist students at all levels and to hear them say, “Now I get it!”
I am an English major with a concentration in Writing, Rhetoric, and Language and am minoring in environmental studies and women & gender studies. I am passionate about both minors and hope to use my English degree to apply my writing and communication skills in those fields. In addition to academic interests, I am a voracious reader, avid hiker, and adventurous crafter. I love working at The Learning Hub and am looking forward to helping you!

Howdy! I’m James Kanter, and I’m a Writing Peer Tutor here at UIS. I’m a transfer student from McHenry County, IL. I have an associate’s degree in Applied Science Criminal Justice and am currently pursuing a bachelor’s in Criminology and Criminal Justice. I have enjoyed writing since an early age. To me, writing is a way to present the best of yourself. When speaking one can stumble or misspeak very easily even if they are trying to be careful. When you write, you can edit out these errors. It is for this reason that I enjoy helping students in their writing. I love to see students present the best of themselves in their papers. In addition to writing I enjoy working out at the gym and playing Magic: The Gathering.

I am seriously looking forward in being your writing tutor this semester! Not only will it be an extremely rewarding experience for me, but also, a magnificent opportunity to learn volumes! I also love to hear the stories of people when I meet them. Allow me to tell you mine:
Patrick G. Anderson Avilés was born and raised in Honduras, Central America. After getting a B.A. in Journalism and a M. A. in Geography from Louisiana State University, he returned to Central America, where he taught high school for several years. During his stint as a Social Studies teacher, Patrick was awarded a Scholarship for an M. Ed. which he completed in 2004. Following his childhood dreams, he then pursued aviation and flew as a turbo-prop Captain “island hopping” in the Western Caribbean. Residing now in Chatham IL, Patrick enjoys cooking, reading, and spending quality time with family. Laying down an intricate World Beat groove on his drum set is also one of his favorite pastimes. Patrick is professionally fluent in English, Spanish, and able to converse in très basique French.
My name is Raven, and I am a junior studying English at UIS. Since I was in the eighth grade, I’ve been fascinated with the written language. It is amazing that the words we write on a page have the potential to transform the way that others view and experience the world. My goal as a peer writing tutor is to help others develop the necessary skills needed to allow their writing to be revolutionary. I am of the opinion that anything I read or write should challenge my thinking and the assumptions I make about the world around me.
In addition to writing, I also enjoying reading, music, and theatre. I am also heavily involved in various student organizations on campus. This is my first year working for The Learning Hub, and I am truly excited about the opportunities, challenges, and rewards I will encounter on this journey.

Then the effort that I have made is what people are pleased to call the fruit of genius. It is the fruit of labor and thought.” –Alexander Hamilton
Hello, my name is Erin Tomasino and I am a graduate student in the Human Development Counseling program here at UIS. My goal is to someday become a school counselor here in the Springfield area.
