Arrive in Malta; transfer to our hotel.
Today we will walk through the City gate of Valletta, the capital of Malta, to reach our hotel. We will see the new Parliament building, Barrakka Gardens and their view of the harbor, and have a group dinner.

Valletta
We begin our walking tour through the compact city of Valletta. Full day visit with faculty director will include St. Paul’s Shipwreck Church, St. John’s Co-Cathedral (Knights of Malta home church), the National Library, the Grand Master’s Palace, Manoel Theatre, the Carmelite Basilica, and the National Museum of Fine Arts.

Valletta and Birgu (Vittoriosa)
We continue our visit to Valletta and then to Birgu (Vittoriosa). We will visit the Sacra Infermeria Museum of the Knights of Malta, Fort St. Elmo and the National War Museum, and then ferry across the harbor to Vittoriosa. There we will explore the Defensive Walls, the Inquisitor’s Palace, Fort St. Angelo, the Norman and English Mansions of the Knights of Malta, the Oratory of St. Joseph, and the Church of St. Lawrence, before returning to Valletta.

Mdina and Rabat
Our day trip will take us to the walled city of Mdina and Rabat. We will walk to St. Paul’s Church and Grotto, the Wignacourt Museum, and St. Paul’s catacombs, and the Domus Romana. Next we will enter Mdina by the Main Gate (seen in Season 1 of Game of Thrones, which filmed in Malta), the National Museum of Natural History, St. Agatha’s Chapel, view the island from its ramparts, and finally St. Paul’s Cathedral and Museum.

Temples and University of Malta
Our journey today begins with a morning visit to the Hypogeum and Tarxien Temples (9 and 10am; limited to 10 per visit). Afterward, we will meet with a professor at the University of Malta to discuss archives there.

Free Day
The entirety of the day is free to explore the island. Possible activities include Golden Bay beach, the island of Comino (the Blue Lagoon), Cooking class in Cospicua, shopping in Valletta, a day trip to the island of Gozo, or whatever you wish.

Our flight takes us to Rome. The balance of the day is free to explore.

Ancient Rome
Our guided tour of Rome begins at the center of the ancient Capital – the Forum and the Colosseum. Full day visits with faculty director by public transportation to The Roman Forum (entrance included), Arch of Titus, Palatine Hill (entrance included), The Colosseum (group reservation and entrance included), The Arch of Constantine, Circus Maximus, S. Maria in Cosmedin, Theater of Marcellus, S. Nicola in Carcere, Capitoline Hill and Piazza del Campidoglio (designed by Michelangelo), Capitoline Museum (entrance included), Santa Maria in Aracoeli.

Rome’s Historic Center
Our guided tour will take us through the historic center of Rome and its neighborhoods. Full day visits with faculty director by public transportation to Piazza del Popolo, Santa Maria del Popolo, Mausoleum of Augustus, Santa Maria di Montesanto & dei Miracoli, Santa Carlo, Piazza Navona, Sant’Agnese in Agone, Santa Maria delle Pace, Piazza Chiesa Nuova, Piazza Campo dei Fiori, Pantheon, Elefantino, Santa Maria sopra Minerva, San Luigi dei Francesi, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Barberini, Santa Maria della Concezione (Capuchin Cemetery), Spanish Steps and Trinity of the Mount (Spagna).

The Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica
Today we begin our visit to Vatican City with a guided tour through the immense Vatican Museums. This amazing collection houses some of the most important Greek and Roman sculptures, Renaissance paintings, and mosaics in the world. Morning visits with faculty director by public transportation to Saint Peter’s Basilica (07.30; Michelangelo’s Pieta and the Sistine Chapel) and Dome (ticket included for climb), The Vatican Museum (group reservation and entrance included) and the Scavi tour (group reservation). Lunch on own. Afternoon visit to Trastevere, Santa Maria in Trastevere, Santa Cecilia, and Isola Tiberina.

A visit to San Clement, Basilica di San Giovanni Lateran, Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, Santa Prassede, Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, and Santa Pudenziana (Repubblica).
OR
A visit to the Galleria Borghese, is highlighted by many of the most famous works of art in the world. The rest of the day may be spent at your leisure.

Trip Information

INCLUSIONS

Breakfast and occasionally dinner daily. All sightseeing and entrance fees for sites. Gratuities for local guides, drivers, restaurant staff, porters.

EXCLUSIONS

Lunches, drinks, personal items (phone, laundry, etc). Optional UIS trip insurance.

SEASONALITY AND WEATHER

The region has a Mediterranean climate. Showers in May are rare but possible. Bring both summer and warm clothes.

TRANSPORT AND TRAVEL CONDITIONS

Transport throughout by public transportation. Short ferry crossings. Walking tours on cobbled surfaces.

ACCOMMODATION

Well-located hotel in Valletta and Rome. You will need to be able to carry your luggage. We will have doubles for accommodation (and in some cases, triples).
