Spring 2017 Starfish Progress Surveys

The UIS Early Alert and Student Success program powered by Starfish® is one of our retention tools used to help students succeed in their courses. Starfish® allows you to notify advisors when students are having trouble in your classes. You can refer students to support services, such as The Learning Hub (formerly the Center for Teaching and Learning) or Career Development Center or Counseling. You can also compliment students with the remarkably popular Kudos. When logged into Starfish, click on your name and go to the Email Notifications tab to view the complete list of flags, referrals and kudos.

As in the past, there will be three standard progress surveys this semester: the first immediately after census (deploys January 28th), the second to coincide with midterm grading (early to mid-March), and the third immediately before the final withdrawal date, April 14, 2017. All 09_, 100, 200, and gateway-to-the-major 300 level courses are included in these standard surveys. There will also be two All Honors Surveys (midterm and final withdrawal), and an All Athlete Midterm Progress survey.

If you raised a flag or made a referral for a student in an earlier survey, you can note improvement in a subsequent survey through a kudo. When you notice improvement, please close the initial flag. In addition to the surveys, you may manually raise a concern flag, make a referral, or send a kudo anytime by logging into Starfish, and accessing the student record through the appropriate course connection. When the issue is addressed or resolved, you may update the alert by visiting the “flags I’m managing” channel on your Starfish Home page, to add comments or close the flag or referral.  Visit the Starfish How To’s page for complete instructions to create a success plan, update an alert or referral, or close a flag.  There are also instructions for documenting your contacts with students that contribute to their success.
