Career Counseling

The Career Development Center utilizes Licensed Professional Counselors, as well as supervised career counselor interns to offer career counseling to UIS students, alumni, and community members. Career counselors are available for personal meetings, as well as phone conferences and online correspondence. Counselors can assist with a variety of career aspirations, goals, or concerns, ranging from helping to determine “what you want to do with your life” to choosing a major, choosing a career path, or making a career transition. CDC counselors can assist in identifying and assessing your interests, personality traits, work values and skills by utilizing strategies and techniques tailored to your specific needs. In addition, a career counselor may recommend and administer career assessments or interactive tools as a method to assist you in pursuing your career goals. It is important to remember the information you share during a career counseling appointment will be kept private and confidential.

What is Distance Career Counseling?
Distance career counseling offers the convenience of being able to work with a career counselor regardless of your location. The UIS Career Counselors have received special training to provide distance counseling services and are currently certified as a distance credentialed counselors (DCC). Distance career counseling is no different than face-to-face counseling except you use technology devices such as a telephone, e-mail, and a confidential internet system (Elluminate) to communicate. Just like meeting in-person, you will complete paperwork and schedule an appointment with the career counselor. After scheduling an appointment, you will receive an e-mail or phone call from the Career Counselor explaining the logistics involved when using services from a distance.

Do I have to pay to see a Career Counselor?
There is no fee for students presently enrolled in at least one credit hour at UIS. Alumni and community members are required to pay a flat fee for each semester services are used. View the Fee Schedule.

How do I schedule an appointment with a Career Counselor?
Scheduling an appointment with a career counselor is easy. Just call the Career Development Center at 217-206-6508 or stop by CDC located in the Student Affairs Building (SAB), Room 50. Appointments are scheduled in 50 minute blocks and are available Monday through Friday from 9a.m. - 4 p.m. (CST).

What should I expect during the first appointment?
For the initial face-to-face appointment, you will want to arrive 15 minutes early to complete the required paperwork. (For distance counseling, special arrangements for completing paperwork will be made prior to your first appointment). You will meet with the career counselor in a private office. The counselor will review your background information and career concerns with you. Be prepared to answer a host of questions, as the more information the counselor has, the better he/she can assist you. Together, you and the counselor will identify your goals and develop your Career Action Plan. Typically, an initial appointment will last 50 minutes, and then a follow up appointment will be scheduled.

Where is the Career Development Center located?
The CDC is located on the eastside of campus in the Student Affairs Building (SAB), Room 50. If driving, you may want to park in Parking Lot A if you have a decal or in the metered lot located just east of the Student Affairs Building. Plan a Visit
