FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Because knowledge of a foreign language is an essential part of being an educated person in our increasingly interconnected world, our Capital Scholars develop oral and written proficiency in a language other than English.

Students who are already proficient in a second language when they enter the program will receive four hours of credit after passing a proficiency examination.

The UIS modern language curriculum is based on language instruction models that emphasize oral instruction by native speakers.

After completing the fourth semester language course, you will be able to speak and understand a second modern language well enough for easy social interaction and will be able to read and write at an intermediate level (in languages using the Latin or Cyrillic alphabets), or beginning level (in Japanese or Chinese).

Language instruction for CAP students is offered in Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. Classes are normally limited to six students.

Visit the Modern Languages website for specific information about language requirements for Capital Scholars Honors students.
