Student Network/Campus Storage

Every UIS student is entitled to 100 megabytes of storage space on the network server. This space is free for students to store important homework or personal files. The storage space is private, and will not be accessible to anyone except the student.

When you log into a Windows PC computer on campus using your NetID, your network drive connection will automatically be mapped and available for use. The drive will be called "yournetid on 'uis10\sdata' (Z:)" For example, John Smith's network drive connection would read: jsmit2 on 'uis10\sdata' (Z:).

Accessing your student network storage drive

  1. Click the Start button in the lower-left corner of the screen.
  2. Click on My Computer.
  3. Your network drive will be located under the heading Network Drives. Double-click on your drive [yournetid on ‘uis10\sdata’ (Z:)] to open it and view the contents. [Note: If this is the first time using your network storage, it will be empty.]
  4. You will now be able to add and remove files at your discretion. Simply drag and drop files to add or move them.

Connecting to a network drive off-campus

If you are on an off-campus computer, such as your own personal computer at home, you can still access your network drive by mapping it. This requires that you first be connected to the UIS network using the UIS VPN Client.

  1. Click the Start button in the lower-left corner of the screen.
  2. Right-click on My Computer and choose Map Network Drive... .

  3. In the Folder area type: \\uis10\sdata\yournetid. Remember that "yournetid" will be your actual NetID. For example, John Smith would type \\uis10\sdata\jsmit2 in the folder area.
  4. If you would like to reconnect to this drive when you log into your computer, check the box next to Reconnect at Login, and then click Finish. [Note: You must once again be connected to the UIS VPN Client in order to access this drive when you login again. If you are not connected to the UIS VPN Client, you will receive an error message.]

Saving files to your network drive

While using an application, you can save your work directly to your network drive just as you would to your desktop.

To save to your network drive, do the following:

  1. Choose File > Save As [or the specified Save feature for your application].
  2. You will be presented with a new window. Click the drop-down box located next to Save in:
  3. A list of destinations will appear. Your network drive will be available in the list [yournetid on 'uis10\sdata' (Z:)].
  4. Choose your drive and then click Save.
[Note: If you are not using a Microsoft application it is possible that your network drive will not have its usual name. In this instance, navigate to the Z: drive if possible and save there. If you have mapped your drive to a letter other than Z:, search for that letter.]
