publishing legacy webPages
What is a legacy website?
"In January 2006, UIS began implementation of a new system for official unit Web sites. We are using the Adobe (Macromedia) Web Publishing System with Contribute Web editing software. We are systematically redeveloping all official unit Web sites." Read more about this project at the Office of Web Services website.
As the project continues to roll, many program and department websites have not yet been redeveloped under the new system. The Office of Web Services recommends that:
- Publishers of those sites may continue to edit their sites as they have done in the past until their new site is developed.
- Limited technical support will be available.
- Department Web personnel can greatly speed the process of site redevelopment by following the Academic Program and Department Guidelines for The UIS Website Project - available on the Office of Web Services Web site.
Maintaining a Legacy Website
Information Technology Services has developed the following resources to maintain legacy website. Using the following guidelines to publish legacy webpages eliminates the need for external applications such as FTP programs. However, you must first map your web storage as a network drive before you begin to maintain your legacy website.
Note: Web storage is not the same as your network storage. Web storage is space given to you by the Technology Support Center to host your departmental or individual website.
Mapping Web Space as a Network Drive
The UIS-allocated space you use to host your website can be mapped to your computer. This allows your web space to be accessed like any normal drive.
- Click the Start button located on the lower left corner of your screen.
- Right-click on My Computer and select Map Network Drive….

- In the Folder area type: \\uisweb1\ followed by the name of your web space that was assigned by the Technology Support Center. For this step the name you enter must not contain spaces and must be followed by a dollar sign. For example, the website for the Culinary Arts Department has been labeled "culinaryarts". Therefore, \\uisweb1\culinaryarts$ would be entered in the Folder area.
- Make sure the box next to Reconnect at logon is checked, then click Finish.

- Note that you may choose any Drive letter to be assigned to the web space. The remainder of this document will assume that your web space has been assigned to X:
At this point your web space will now be accessible as a normal drive.
Note: The Technology Support Center strongly recommends that you do not add, delete, or edit any of the files in the drive without the use of Contribute, Dreamweaver, or FrontPage.
Publishing Legacy Websites with Adobe Contribute
With Contribute, users can create and publish websites without the use of any external applications. To publish a website, do the following from within Contribute:
- Click Edit and select My Connections.

- Click Create and then click Next.

- The connection wizard will ask for the URL of your website. Instead of using the standard "www" URL [e.g. www.uis.edu/culinaryarts] you must now use "webstage2". Therefore, you will type http://webstage2.uis.edu/ followed by the name of your web space as assigned by the Technology Support Center. For example, "http://webstage2.uis.edu/culinaryarts" would be used for the Culinary Arts Department.
- Click Next.

- In the first drop-down box select Local/Network.
- In the second box enter the letter of your mapped web space followed by a colon [for this example we are using X:].
- Click Next.

- You will now be asked for user information. While this information is not technically necessary, it is a good idea to provide it. When finished click Next.

- At the congratulations screen, click Done.
- Your website will now be listed as a connection. Click Close to begin editing your website.

Publishing Legacy Websites with Adobe Dreamweaver
With Dreamweaver users can create and publish websites without the use of any external applications. To publish a website, do the following from within Dreamweaver:
- Locate the drop-down menu under the Files tab in the upper-right portion of the screen [the default is set to Desktop].

- Click on the drop down menu and select your mapped web space. It will be listed as Network Drive (X:) [Note: If you have your network drive mapped to a letter other than X, simply select the drive with that letter].

- Your website will now be listed under the files tab. You may open any html file you wish simply by double-clicking on it.

- After making the desired edits, click on File and then Save to save your changes. Your changes will be saved to the web space and published to the internet.
Publishing Legacy Websites with Microsoft FrontPage
With FrontPage users can create and publish websites without the use of any external applications. FrontPage requires that you first transfer files from your web space to your local computer before editing them. Therefore, your website is edited locally [on your hard drive] and then is sent to your web space. To publish a website, do the following from within FrontPage:
- Click File and then click Import.

- Select From Site.
- When presented with the "Import Web Site Wizard – Welcome" screen, select File System.
- Under Web Site Location enter the letter of your mapped web space followed by a colon [for this example we are using X:].

- Make sure that the box next to Include subsites is checked and then click Next.
- Choose where you would like your website to be stored on your hard drive. You may either enter a new directory or you may browse to one. For this tutorial we have created a folder called "culinary arts website" in the My Web Sites folder under My Documents.

- Click Next. You should be presented with a congratulations screen. Click Finish to continue.
- You will be presented with a screen showing files hosted on your computer ["Local Website" on the left] and files published on the internet ["Remote Website" on the right]. FrontPage allows users to edit their website locally [on the left] before uploading it to their web space [on the right]. Files may also be downloaded from the "Remote Website” area to the "Local Web site" area, placing them on your computer.
- Click on any item in the Remote Website area. Press Ctrl+A on your keyboard. All of the files listed in the Remote Web site area should be selected.

- In the middle of the divider separating the two areas [Local Website and Remote Website] are three blue arrows. The middle blue arrow [pointing to the left] will download the selected files to your hard drive. Click the middle blue arrow to download the selected files to your local space.
- Your website is now located on your hard drive [on the left] and on the internet [on the right]. You may edit your web site locally before publishing it to the internet.
- After you have made the desired changes to your website, you can publish the changes to the internet. Under Publish all changed pages in the lower-right portion of the screen click Local to remote.

- Click Publish Website. Your changes will now be published to the internet.
- To publish all files regardless of changes, simply click on any item in the Local Web site area and then press Ctrl+A on your keyboard. All of the files listed in the Local Web site area should be selected. Click the upper blue arrow [pointing to the right] to upload the selected files to the internet.
