To Upload Your Files to UIS Servers Using WS-FTP
Step One: Prepare Your Files
Make sure everything is ready. Have your files on a floppy disk ("a" drive) or on the C drive (or hard drive, or desktop) of your computer.
Make sure everything is named in lowercase letters with no spaces between words. Use the "eight-dot-three" naming convention, i.e., the name should be eight letters or less, then type a period, then type the file extension, i.e., htm, html, gif, etc. Your initial page, or "home page" should be named "index.html."
Step Two: FTP the Files to the Server
- Open WS-FTP. Make sure the Host Name and Profile Name show the name of the server, for example, "students.uis.edu" (This is the name of the server where your accounts reside.)
- Type your "domain" and "login name" as follows: uisad\NetID
- Then type your "password."
- You will see two columns. The right-side column is your web account. The left-side column is the computer you are working from.
- On the left side, find the "a" or "C" drive where you stored your files. Click once on one of your files to select it.
- Click once on the arrow in the middle that points to the right. The file is transferred to your account. To make sure, click on the "Refresh" button to see if it is really there.
Step Three: View Your Page in an Internet Browser
- Open your browser. Type in your URL. It should be:
http://name of server/your NetID
for example:
http://students.uis.edu/your NetID
