How to Upload Your Files to UIS Servers Using FETCH on a Macintosh Computer
Step One: Prepare Your Files
Make sure everything is ready. Have your files on a floppy disk or on the hard drive or desktop of your computer.
Make sure everything is named in lowercase letters with no spaces between words. Use the "eight-dot-three" naming convention, i.e., the name should be eight letters or less, then type a period, then type the file extension, i.e., htm, html, gif, etc. Your initial page, or "home page" should be named "index.html" or "index.htm".
Step Two: FTP the Files to the Server
- Open FETCH. Make sure the Host Name shows the name of the server, for example, "students.uis.edu" (This is the name of the server where your account resides.)
- Type in your "UserID", using your "domain" and "Net
ID." For example: uisad\NetID. Then type your "password." Leave
the "Directory" field blank.
Click the "OK" button. - Because you may be working from a lab computer, you should check the Fetch set-up on the computer you are working on, as other users may set their own particular preferences.
- Find the menu item at the top that says "Customize." Choose "Preferences."
- In the dialog box that appears, click on the "Download" tab. Remove the check near the field that says "Use Download Folder." **
- Then, click on the "Upload" tab. Make sure the "Default Text Format" is "Text." Make sure the "Default non-text format" is "Raw Data." Remove the checks by these boxes: "Add .hqx suffix..." "Add .bin suffix..." Add .txt suffix..." When you are done, click on the "OK" button.
- You will see the FTP box that shows your web account files on the left.
- To upload a file to your account, you can find the file on the desktop of the computer and drag it to the empty area in the bottom right of the FTP box. Or, you can click on the "Put File..." button and navigate to identify the file on your computer.
- If you want to download a file from your web account to your computer, click once on the file in the list on the left-hand side to identify it, and then click the "Get File..." button.
Step Three: View Your Page in an Internet Browser
- Open your browser. Type in your URL. It should be:
http://name of server/your NetID
for example:
http://students.uis.edu/your NetID
(If you are working regularly from your own computer, you may wish to set up a permanent download location in order to identify a regular folder for receiving downloads. If you are working from a lab computer, it is better to specify the download location at the time you actually do the download, so you do not "lose" your file.)
